Atlantic City Horse Racing Operators Proposes Slot Machine Installation

On April 4th, 2009, a proposal that will permit slot machines at horse racing tracks (racinos) is once again drawing criticism from Atlantic City casino officials and some local politicians.

Representatives from horse racing associations and horse breeder appeared before the New Jersey Assembly and Senate budget committee last week, asking legislators to study the slot machine idea as another option to produce revenue in the state while supporting the industry.

The president of the Casino Industry Association of New Jersey, Joseph Corbo said that Atlantic City is already suffering from the financial crisis and more gaming competition from neighboring states and the slot machine proposal would just cause more job losses, affect state taxes from casinos and scale down purchases from vendors in New Jersey.
