The Debate Escalates Between Pro and Anti Slot Machines Supporters in Maryland

On June 24th, 2008, the fight over the slot machines in the state of Maryland is reaching its peak as pro and anti slots groups are trying to convince voters about what they are fighting for. Slot machines supporters argued that the state could not ignore the millions of dollars that the slot machines could contribute to the state coffers. But critics of the slots plan like some elected officials commented that the addition of thousands of slot machines at Laurel Park could only mean more gambling addiction.

Prince George's County's State Lawyer Glenn Ivey commented that around $95 million is project for horse racing every year. He added that it is a good way to subsidize the horse racing industry. Robert Carl, a resident of Laurel said the slot machines can produce the millions of dollars that the schools need.

One voter, Peggy Roca, who is still undecided about the whole thing, commented that she has mixed feelings about the issue. It may not be a good thing for the community but it certainly produces a lot of money. A statewide poll conducted in January shows about fifty-four percent of voters were in favor of slot machines, while thirty-eight percent commented that they do not like it.

But pollsters commented that the opposition to the slot machines tends to increase throughout the campaign with just a little over 4 months until the election.
