Millstone Backs Slots Plan at Racing Tracks

A proposal supporting the installation of casino slots and VLT's or Video Lottery Terminals at the horse racing tracks around the state passed during the November 7th, 2007 township committee meeting. The township will send copies of the decision to Gov. Jon Corzine and the other concerned officials.

Mayor Nancy Grbelja, who is an owner of standard bred racehorses, said that the recent Breeder's Cup held at the Monmouth Park in Oceanport focused a lot of attention on the horse racing industry of New Jersey. She said that horse racing purses in the state have been usually subsidized by the casinos in Atlantic City but that will stop on December 31st, 2007.

Mayor Grbelja said that she has already talked with Manalapan Mayor Andrew Lucas and Upper Freehold Committeeman Stephen Alexander about asking their towns to support a similar resolution. Millstone's resolution states that the state of New Jersey has 42,000 horses and 7,200 equine operations with about $4 billion in horse related assets.

The resolution also states the role of the horse and its importance to the residents of the state. The resolution also recognizes the study of the researchers which found out the impact of the horse racing industry to the economy annually, with $1.1 billion yearly, with $160 million going to federal taxes, state taxes and local taxes and about 13,000 individuals employed.

It also acknowledges the importance of the horse racing industry to agriculture. The resolution also states that the horse racing industry relies on a strong horse racing circuit that supports the different parts of the horse racing world.

The resolution also urges state legislators to pushed for the installation of the VLT's at New Jersey racing tracks and make sure that the New Jersey Casino Control Commission gives $45 million yearly so that the New Jersey racing tracks can effectively stand in the same level with their competitors from the neighboring states.
