Foxwoods Casino Officials Studies the Possibility of Building a Temporary Slots Facility

The gaming developer of one of the two slot-machine casino facilities planned on the waterfront of the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania said that it is thinking about constructing a temporary casino facility rather than constructing a permanent establishment in phases.

Foxwoods Casino has notified Pennsylvania gaming regulators on October 17th, 2009 that it would seriously evaluate the idea at its South Philadelphia casino location, saying that that it had unanticipated issues involving financing. Regulators have ordered that the 1,500 slot machines be operation by May 29th, 2011. Foxwoods Casino said that it has hired investment bankers to help them get more financing for the project.

Brian Abernathy, who is an aide to Councilman Frank DiCicco and whose district includes the Foxwoods location, says that a box that is surrounded by a lot of parking area is not doing slots gaming right. Jethro Heiko of the Casino-Free Philadelphia said that such a gaming project would be at an immediate disadvantage since it will not be able to compete with other gaming establishments. A spokesperson for Mayor Nutter declined to comment on the issue.
