Maine Groups Against Slot Machines Hit Snag In Petition Campaign

Slot opponents are trying to push new legislation January 23, 2007 that will effectively ban slot machines in the state of Maine, but have fallen short of their objective, which is to get the needed signatures for a new referendum on the proposal November 2007.

A spokesman for the organization, "No Slots for Me!" commented that they will try again so that it could be put onto the ballot by November. Muir gave no clue on how many signatures that they have already collected. The number of signatures that is needed has to be at least 55,807 signatures or about 10% percent of the gubernatorial vote. The initiative seeks to stop the slot machines located at Hollywood Slots in Bangor and stop any future slot parlors from setting up in the area. Groups and individuals that are supporting the propose casino in Oxford commented that they are keeping their fingers cross to get the measure for the referendum in the 2008 elections.
