Alex Mooney to Serve at the Marylanders United to Stop Slot Machines Steering Committee

On September 11th, 2008, State Senator Alex Mooney will serve on the steering committee of the Marylanders United to Stop slot machines. Mooney, who is a long-time slots critic who represents Frederick and Washington Counties, commented that he also plans to spread the anti-slots machine message to his fellow Republicans. The issue will be decided by voters as a referendum in the November 2008 election.

If approved, the language will be added to the state constitution, giving permission to 15,000 slot machines in five locations around the state-Allegany, Anne Arundel, Cecil and Worcester Counties and Baltimore City. He firmly believes that the slot machine language was made to help Democrats in the legislature, rather that what is advantageous for the state. He also objects on adding the slots language to the state constitution, because it will be harder to modify or eliminate completely.

He joins roughly around 125 people on the steering committee, together with outspoken slots critic Comptroller Peter Franchot, a Democrat. Franchot said that while they do not bear the same opinion on every issue, Senator Mooney is a man of great character and he will certainly be a big help on the issue. Other members of the steering committee include former U.S. Representative Beverly Byron, Guy Djoken, president of the Frederick County NAACP and local business owner Peter Plamondon Sr.
